Bonus as a % of Salary vs. Commission?

I'm looking for advice on the pro's and con's of an incentive compensation scheme for our Commerical Director, who I rate and performs well. We are a SaaS Data Warehousing/BI company and TCV's can range from $80k one year deals to several million multi-year deals (although naturally those deals are not as common as I would like, but the potential is certainly there!) He has a base $170k, a 5% equity stake in a mixture of share options and a discounted purchase of some of my stake (2%). The base bonus is between 20-30% on achievement of sales targets (exact figures still to be determined) and there is a request for both accelerated bonuses should SvT be over achieved as well as commissions on significant deals. I'm reluctant on commissions as I can see having huge payouts frankly and from the vertical we're in commissions appear uncommon from a straw poll of 4 other similar (but not directly competitive) companies. However, taking my natural bias out of avoiding a vast commission paid the I'm wondering what people would consider of the pro's/con's of commissions versus % salary payouts on achievement and over achievements of sales targets? Hi, We'd like to embed an online Membership Sales and Enrollment solution on our IF4IT web site. Does anyone know what the best options are for doing so? Here are some of our requirements we'd like to address... We'd like to be able to define Different Membership Types and assign Different Costs/Prices for each Type . We'd like to be able to enroll each Member according to their type, collecting all of their relevant contact information. We'd like to collect and process the new Member's payment .
