User interface and useability assistance

Our Windows desktop app is showing its age; it needs the following: 1. User interface upgrade 2. Consistency of data entry and cursor movement 3. Redesign of certain functions that are klunky We do not have the in-house expertise to develop an interface standard, and apply it. We also don't have the means to really test throughout all the code for UI compliance. So can anyone recommend a development company that can: 1. Identify/create a proper user interface 2. Apply it to our code 3. Clean up some of the processes that are unwieldy or 'klunky' Thanks for any suggestions.
2013: The Identity Silver Lining for SaaS in the Enterprise Clouds

The clouds have arrived. Whether public cloud, private cloud or hybrid cloud, enterprises are on-board with their transition to cloud. While cloud hype is still high, the move is clearly afoot and enterprises are quickly tapping into cloud services for all aspects of their business. However for most, it&rsquo;s not an all-in play. So what does this mean for software executives? Here&rsquo;s what I see coming in 2013. Going Hybrid In 2013 as enterprises adopt cloud services, they&rsquo;ll require the ability to easily integrate with their on-premise infrastructure that has been built over a decade (or longer). As such, cloud companies will look at on-premise capabilities to have the hybrid cloud approach that gives enterprise IT the security and controls they need and a migration path to the future. The fastest, easiest path to this is through identity management integration, using standards that enterprises require for future-proofing and interoperability. Most enterprises today use Active Directory, Google or Salesforce as their identity directory, so software-as-a-service (SaaS) providers would be wise to build/extend their software with that in mind, and turn to identity standards for the fastest path to get there. SaaS Excitement, SAML Requirement Often what happens is an enterprise is...<div><a href="http://www.softwareceo.com/blog/entry/47396/2013-The-Identity-Silver-Lining-for-SaaS-in-the-Enterprise-Clouds/">[Read more]</div>

Next on the Menu: ERP Software

In my previous posts, we examined the ERP software market and specifically, laid out the framework for evaluating vendors and examined best practices for implementing the software. Now, I'd like to take it a step further by exploring how the food industry relies on ERP systems to meet the challenges of today's economic and highly regulated environment. The food sector is of particular interest because it is a very process-heavy and deadline oriented market that relies on technology to drive productivity, operational efficiency, and inventory management. When the Food Safety Modernization Act was signed in January 2011, it placed added pressure on food manufacturers and distributors to ensure a safe food supply chain. The law gave the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the power to order recalls of contaminated food and request records from food organizations to provide reports related to the manufacturing, distribution and packaging of any product. So, for example, if your company sells broccoli and the FDA uncovers a problem with the broccoli--whether contaminated, expired, etc.--the government can request all of your records. And if you fail to provide these records, your company can be banned from selling that product. Furthermore, the FDA has the power to...<div><a href="http://www.softwareceo.com/blog/entry/47323/Next-on-the-Menu-ERP-Software/">[Read more]</div>

CloudCamp: A Lightning Talk on Security in the Cloud

With only five minutes to talk about cloud single sign-on (SSO), I covered as much ground as I could. Here are the highlights on my presentation: &bull; The average corporate employee uses 15 SaaS apps &bull; Log-in screens and credential requirements of each are often quite different &bull; The traditional method of password management - sticky notes! - is simply not secure! &bull; A better, more secure SaaS user experience can be achieved through cloud SSO &bull; Removing the user from as much of the log-in process as possible is the key, and secure Internet SSO makes it possible Here's how secure Internet SSO works The enterprise, or identity provider (IdP), manages the users' credentials and provides information to the service provider (SP) for them to establish user sessions. This is accomplished by industry standards that help transfer identity information between IdP and SP completely behind the scenes without user intervention. It's a winning formula. Here's why: Enterprises win because they can be confident user IDs are secure,...<div><a href="http://www.softwareceo.com/blog/entry/46998/CloudCamp-A-Lightning-Talk-on-Security-in-the-Cloud/">[Read more]</div>

Salesforce Joins the Identity Party - What Does this Mean for You?

Last month at Dreamforce &lsquo;12 , Salesforce announced new services, including Salesforce Identity , a service that includes single sign-on (SSO) and user management capabilities. Salesforce Identity will leverage identity standards such as the Security Assertion Markup Language ( SAML ) for federation and System for Cross-Domain Identity Management ( SCIM ) for provisioning, which emphasizes the vital role of industry standards long-championed by Ping Identity. When a major enterprise cloud computing company like Salesforce sets its sights on identity and SSO, it is a clear signal of how essential identity security is to today's socially-connected enterprise. At Ping, we welcome Salesforce to the identity community and applaud their commitment to industry standards. Salesforce SSO enabling its platform presents tremendous opportunity for both application developers building on the platform and for enterprises seeking to tap into those apps that run critical business functions. If you are a company that manages your identity infrastructure in the Cloud and rely heavily on the Salesforce platform, a centralized place from which to manage identities is welcomed news. [disclaimer: brief product plug] There are also many enterprises that rely on on-premises directories such as Microsoft Active Directory for their core identity store. With this...<div><a href="http://www.softwareceo.com/blog/entry/46483/Salesforce-Joins-the-Identity-Party-What-Does-this-Mean-for-You/">[Read more]</div>

Customers (build-test-release-deploy) process, enabling organizations to deliver their business-critical applications to market faster, with higher quality and improved infrastructure utilization. Founded in 2002, Electric Cloud has 120 employees, and is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., with a development center in Fort Collins, Colo., and sales and marketing offices worldwide. Venture funding has come from Mayfield , Rembrandt , and US Venture Partners . "We have chosen not to be profitable at this point," says marketing VP Kalyan Ramanathan. "We're investing in our business, and have not taken any additional investment money in the last four years." The focus on growth over profit appears to be paying off: Recognized last year as a Deloitte Technology Fast 500 company and named to the Inc. 500 list, Electric Cloud has real momentum: Their growth rate nearly tripled during the period from 2006 to 2010. We spoke with Ramanathan recently to get his advice for growing your software startup. Tip #1: Software is what defines all companies, not just developers.

We are looking to develop mobile extensions to our desktop app. I don't think we have the internal skill set to really spec the project out; we just don't have experience with all the potential issues (look/feel, sync to database, cloud options, etc.). I'd like to find a consultant who has expertise and experience, who can spec the project out. Not looking for coding just yet; looking to have a tight front end, so when we do go to programming, we have the best chance for success. Any ideas? Thank you, Matthew<div><a href="http://www.softwareceo.com/forum/thread/46007/Development-consultand/">[Read more]</div>
