The idea of offering a reduced version of the software for trial has been discussed quite a bit within these forums. Also, some have suggested that a shorter trial is better than a longer one.

We want to give users a good understanding of our software before they buy. It is technical modeling software in the $500 range. Our target is engineers, and technicians in small to medium businesses.

Our options so far for a 30 day trial are:

* Reduce the size of the models and feature capabilities to a few elements so that you can't build very commercially viable solutions with the trial version.

* Give the full software, but don't let users save models. This would limit the ability to test the software on more sophisticated problems - and to learn its use over a few days.

* Full functionality and printing results of the model with a background that says: "Trial version -- Company Name -- URL"

* Other ideas?

What do you think will work best?

I'd love to hear creative ideas on how to make the trial a great experience for users, but they walk away with hunger to buy it. Do you have any stats sales improvement for a particular trial strategy?

I am a firm believer in upwards of 30 day trials...but be sure to limit functionality relative to printing (like putting TRIAL on all print outs, saving files (limiting number of changes/saves), and even installs to a machine. Also be sure to make the process to go from trial to live as pain free as possible and allow anything they have done on the trial version to carry over to the fully licensed version. Nothing more frustrating than playing with the product then having to start over once one decides to buy.....

Another option is full-featured, time-limited. The commercial license control products, such as Moderator Dominic Haigh's www.agilis-sw.com, will let you do this with 99.9% certainty that your product will not get stolen. Of course, for some products, say a virus removal tool, the customer only needs the product for a few hours, so this approach won't work.

Hello Charles,

I think some customers will want to use it to solve an occasional problem. For these customers we offer a light version. We think our key traget customers are engineers and technicians in small to medium businesses who solve these type of problems on a daily basis. So your suggestion would work well.

Its very hard to find good advise and information about the best strategy for a trial version of software. It seems to me after a few years of experimentation with our trial at
www.ikitmovie.com that the most important factor is explaining the product fully to the user. That's where a good help file or assisted help on startup is key.
