Hi

Ours is a 5 year old company into variuos IT solutions operating in India. We have done lots of web work in India for almost 1000 companies.

Currently, we are looking to get projects from USA & UK.
I have some local contacts over there, but no one is aware as to how get the projects from there.

Is there any website / directory that gives listing. I do not mind a paid membership to these websites.

Also, i have heard that there are websites which gives you leads for projects for some commission or charge per lead basis. If i can get hold of the websites it would be great.

Also, what do you think are the chances of getting projects if I personally visit to USA for around 3-4 months of time. What are the variuos means of marketing and getting leads once i land up in USA.

Regards

If you visit the US, you might want to do so around the time of Software 2005 -- there are more software companies in attendance there than any other single conference all year long.

I realize, however, that your prospects aren't just ISVs -- I would think you also want corporate IT departments. But whether you're marketing software or services or cement mixers, it's getting those first two or three marquee clients that's always the toughest hurdle.

Personally, I don't think you will be very successful securing clients in the U.S. for your outsourcing business unless you have permanent representation here. The competition is fierce and most serious Indian companies offering outsourcing services in the areas of call centers support services and product development either have set up offices or has permanent sales and marketing partners. The U.K. is probably a better choice since that market currently is not as competitive as the U.S.

The question is really a subset of the general question "how do I sell something?" or more specifically "how do I sell a product that is new to the market?"

Volumes have been devoted to that subject, but some short tips would be

- Determine the market need that you fill
- Determine how to reach your prospective buyers
- Focus on a niche
- Possibly partner
- After conquering that niche, expand

How do your successful competitors sell? How did they get started?

Do any of your 1000 Indian customers have US or UK affiliates, associates, or contacts to which they would recommend you?

What is your unique selling proposition? I want some software written -- why should I choose you rather than a hundred other offshore outsourcers? (Don't tell me cheap, high quality, reliable -- that's what they all say, that's not unique.) When you can answer that question, the answers to "how do I get projects" should start to materialize. If you don't know the answer to that question, then answering your question is going to be tough.

Bruce, Oystein, he asked specifically about paid referral Web sites. Any ideas? Nikhil, have you tried searching in Google on Outsourcing and seeing if any of the hits you get are referral Web sites or brokers of some sort?

Hi Nikhil,

There are a couple of options you could look into as a step one:

(1) Contact the Indian consulates in the US and UK or the Indian Department of Commerce and find out if they can help. I know that the U.S. Export Assistance Centers (part of U.S. Department of Commerce) offer such help to U.S. companies that are looking for partners outside the U.S.

Here are a couple of web sites:

http://commerce.nic.in/welcome.html

http://www.indianconsulate-sf.org/

(2) There are some Indian marketplace websites that you can check out. Here is one:

www.indiamart.com

Finally, if neither of these options provide any answers for you -- or even if they do -- you are welcome to contact me directly, since The York Group helps technology companies recruit and manage international partners.

Best regards,

Oystein

There are also Indian associations in various cities in the U.S. that focus on business development. There was one such organization in Austin. I've looked for their email address, but haven't found it.

Typically, Indian companies set up a local office from which to sell and coordinate work. They bid on work without worrying about where the work is done.

Hi Nikhil:

Most of what needs to be said has been said re your request but I thought I would add a few points I hope will help further.

A few years back I met a number of Indian companies trying to set up in Europe and scout for projects. They placed someone in an office, paid a retainer to an old hand of the local software associations (former CEO's of computer manufacturers with a contact list) and took a run at potential projects over 2 years without success.

The problem was they were competing with local professional services companies and only in cases where they could join in local tenders when their price difference came in did they get any traction. Also the local senior executive wasn't a hungry sales guy.

The UK is at home with India for all the historical reasons and some recent annoucncements on big deals have attracted attention such as Orange UK.

In addition to what Oystein has recommended I would focus on a niche competence and using the Indian agencies, plan for a tour in the UK and think about how you could make a difference to a local prof. services outfit with an existing customer base. Your consulate will help you connext with a few names.

Winning these types of deals is very much the about human presence so I doubt web sites would substitute local presence.

Regards

Colin

Hello Nikhil,

I went through all the entries, no where I found you coming back and enjoying the responses and asking further questions. This will encourage the genuine helping minded people to answer more.

Normally, the trend is that - one person asks a questions and there are series of answers without verifying, is there a listeners ?

At least - if you got a satisfactory answer or not - will help closing the discussion and others who asked similar questions, will know how to proceed.

I assume you and all others who asked similar questions are still searching for a direction and an answer.

My request to any such person -

01. Set aside sufficient budget for the work, including a retainer ( at least one person) onsite

02. Partner with other Indian and foreign firms with same objectives

03. Have a practical Marketing Plan, Fund flow analysis, Business Plan taking help of MBA Interns from US students.

04. Get back to me - I will help you, if you need help after this.

Thanks
Sabya
