Hi there,

We are small developers located in Europe. I am wondering if anyone could explain me how to build our own web store. What do we need? Today we are using eSellerate, but we are not happy with the design, % they take from us and domain. What do we need? Who could help us to build our own web store? Also we would like to receive money not monthly, but in real-time (could be one day delay).

Thanks a lot for your input.

It all depends on how much you are willing to invest. Most easy solutions will pay you on a monthly basis and will take about 10% commission...

If you have merchant account to process credit card payments, have people sitting next to the phone to answer sales questions and want to set up a secure online processing mechanism you can probably get paid as the sales are performed...

This will take both time and money.

If the one month issue is not a deal breaker for you, I would look at regsoft.com. I am using them and it is a pleasant experience.

You can get a very high quality website for a resonable price at orientmedia.com. I use them exclusively and it is the best choice I have made in a long time...They can also help with software usability and design if needed.

I have a client who uses NetSuite (Oracle is now letting NetSuite go but they are still affiliated for a short while longer) www.netsuite.com. Not only do you get the web site and the store but you get the entire backend accounting system including inventory, etc.

The only drawback is that it is an ASP subscription based model. But, they don't take a percentage of your sales and you have full control over the setup and how you use the system.

I am in no way, currently, affiliated with Oracle or NetSuite; however, about four years ago I was a reseller of the NetSuite/Oracle Small Business Server solution. It was good at the time and appears to have gotten better.

There are many software vendors out there that sell storefront/shopping cart software that you can integrate into your website. A couple of popular ones are:

www.miva.com
www.zoovy.com

My understanding from your question is that you've already gone the more "turnkey" approach and are looking for more control and lower costs. If you do your own web development, since you are developers, you may be able to do this on your own. But be cautioned that there are considerably more 'gotchas" than with simple web development.

If you decide not to try to integrate shopping cart software on your own, the other option is to go to a website development shop. In this case you would want to go only to people who have built multiple ecommerce sites, not just simple, pretty websites. You can go to the reference sites and check them out, to see if they work well. I have worked with a company called webpublishing (www.webpublishing.com) several times and they are very capable in this area. If you decide to contact them feel free to use my name.

So, what are you selling?

Does your group of small developers, or is that a small group of developers :D, have web development expertise?

Got a website we can take a gander at?

Having a web storefront (in my reseller world) would suggest that you have a slew of products to offer or you're possibly selling products other than your own and you need all the comparison and browsing features of an online store. Have you considered one of the many "shopping cart" packages?

Or maybe something as simple as PayPal for instant cash flow, a little commission pricey - but with their account dedicated debit card it's instant cash.

I couldn't find your website so I don't know what you are selling. Is it an item customers are likely to buy straight from your website without talking to you?

There is at least one solution that would allow you to keep your domain name and not pay usurious fees for commissions, etc. I put together my site, www.usedphonesforless.com without any personal knowledge of Java, HTML, etc. About a third of our orders come straight over the website without even talking to the customer.

Your experience might be different depending on what you sell. We offer business phone system equipment that is fairly ubiquitous such as Norstar, Partner, Meridian, Definity, etc. Listing your items for sale online may only be step one.

There are some limitations we have run into, but it got us up and running with reasonable expense, capability and withoutmeaningful bandwidth constraints.

Since you have your own development team, I would suggest that you build your own store using ASP or PHP. The reason is that you will have more control to manage your sales, fraud prevention and customer support issue.

Talking about online payment solution, 2Checkout.com and Worldpay are worth considering. We are currently using 2Checkout.com and their fraud protection is not that good. Meanwhile, Worldpay is more costly to get started.

Hi

I use eSellerate as well and can agree with you on the reasons why you might want to move on. However, having looked at the market, we have found it difficult to find a partner who can offer the licence keys and this is really difficult to do yourself.

Take a look at Digital River as an alternative.
